Definition
A cloud development environment platform rebranded from Gitpod in 2025 with an agent-first pivot.
Ona provides automated, ready-to-code environments designed for both human developers and AI agents. There is no customer-managed self-hosted Ona: what exists is Ona-managed "runners" deployed into your own AWS or GCP VPC, an Enterprise-plan-only option in which source code and code execution stay inside your network while the control plane remains Ona's. That is bring-your-own-cloud, not self-hosting. OpenAI announced on 06-11-2026 that it is acquiring Ona; the deal has not closed, regulatory approval is pending, and neither party has commented on the future of the open-source repository, the Core plan, or the runner model.
Where This Fits
This term is covered in depth on Ona (formerly Gitpod) Review.
Ona is a managed service with runners in your own cloud, not a self-hosted platform. What that distinction means, and the pending OpenAI deal.
