Definition
An integrated development environment with AI capabilities built into its core architecture rather than added as plugins.
AI-native IDEs like Cursor and Zed feature inline code generation, natural language editing, codebase-aware chat, and agentic workflows as first-class features, representing a shift from traditional IDEs with bolt-on AI extensions. Note that Windsurf, still listed in many roundups, is not a current brand: Codeium became Windsurf, Cognition acquired the remaining Windsurf entity on 07-14-2025, and the product became Devin Desktop on 06-02-2026.
